and the number of indian gorcery shops that have sprung up in the last 6 monthes is amazing they have all but tripled

study day - 30 October

Hi Fellow Weary Travellers:

I'm wondering if any of you will join me in a study day next Thursday? I'd be really pleased to get the company. I'm sure many people are in the library anyway, but something I read early on in a pscyh book was that people work harder if they think they are being watched.

So what I mean is block book some PCs and a discussion room, deliberately get to the Lib early, take a break together - even bring food to share - maybe have a time for discussion on essays - problems, share information, read drafts, have general bitch about how these people work us too hard...and go home late - possibly after a visit to the pub.

My target is to get a good draft of the mod essay out next week.

Rousseau link?

The article we've just read in Tradition about the friendship of Diderot and Rousseau and their different interests in the status of artisans...well, it seems a lot like Gandhi and his khadi movement. I had a brief peda-Google and it seemed that Gandhi spoke often of Rousseau's Social Contract but that his philosophical influences were Ruskin and Tolstoy (p.172)...any other links?

Hi All, Today is Diwali (New Year’s Day) according to the Hindu lunar calendar. There are heaps of events on at Federation Square. But the most spectacular is the amazing firework display at sunset tonight. See you there (I’ll be having dinner at one of the restaurants)

Diwali is the most popular of all Hindu festivals (also known as the festival of lights). It is dedicated to the goddess Kali in Bengal and the goddess Lakhsmi, the goddess of wealth in the rest of India. It is a significant festival for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.
The festival also marks the victory of good over evil, and uplifting of spiritual darkness. Symbolically it marks the homecoming of goodwill and faith after an absence, as suggested by the Ramayana.
