a new exhibition

Hello,
I'm still in marking mode.... but I did find time to see the following at the Immigration Museum...well worth it. The show has been put together by George Michel (not george michael), much of his work has centred on the architecture of Vijayanagara Empire (i..e. he has quite a few publications and is also a regular visitor to Melbourne (and also a nice guy). What I enjoyed most was the reworking of a 19th century photograph by his photographer friend. Also the digital display was awesome:

(Bombay) i got the short of it, but am wondering who it is, apparenly its an unknown terrorest organisation, which makes me wonder is its a politiacal group holding a Coup, wondering if anyone knows more about it. Are we looking at the begining of the re-emergence of the Veidic ages?

attack of the clones

Here's a story that came out in the cricket website I view often...it's related to one of the last topics we covered in class to do with fundamentalism.

"Attack of the clones
With retirements the flavour of the month, there's one option India's senior cricketers could consider: politics. At the moment it's their clones who are cashing in. Along with a few film stars, a Sachin Tendulkar lookalike is canvassing for votes ahead of the upcoming elections in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. A few households were pleasantly surprised to see "Tendulkar" at their doorsteps last week. "My nine-year-old son Rehan was thrilled when he responded to the doorbell Sunday morning to find Sachin himself standing with three friends," said one of those caught unawares. "I asked my son, 'How come Sachin is roaming here rather than playing cricket against Australia?' Then my husband said he was just the cricketer's lookalike.
The lady then went on to recount how "Sachin" was in a hurry and refused to wait for some food she wanted to offer him. "He just asked for tea and reminded us how our votes are important and advised us to prefer the BJP [the ruling party in the state]." "

need assistance

Hi
does anyone know how I can remove an image from a posting????

This weeks questions.

Heya all i was wondering if anyone else isn't quite sure what the first question on the work sheet is.

whilst i know what its referencing i don't know what it wants me to do :/.

also Sara do you mean the 30th of October? November seems a little late

study day - 30 October

Hi Fellow Weary Travellers:

I'm wondering if any of you will join me in a study day next Thursday? I'd be really pleased to get the company. I'm sure many people are in the library anyway, but something I read early on in a pscyh book was that people work harder if they think they are being watched.

So what I mean is block book some PCs and a discussion room, deliberately get to the Lib early, take a break together - even bring food to share - maybe have a time for discussion on essays - problems, share information, read drafts, have general bitch about how these people work us too hard...and go home late - possibly after a visit to the pub.

My target is to get a good draft of the mod essay out next week.

Rousseau link?

The article we've just read in Tradition about the friendship of Diderot and Rousseau and their different interests in the status of artisans...well, it seems a lot like Gandhi and his khadi movement. I had a brief peda-Google and it seemed that Gandhi spoke often of Rousseau's Social Contract but that his philosophical influences were Ruskin and Tolstoy (p.172)...any other links?

Happy Diwali Priya (New Year's day/Festival of Lights)

Hi All, Today is Diwali (New Year’s Day) according to the Hindu lunar calendar. There are heaps of events on at Federation Square. But the most spectacular is the amazing firework display at sunset tonight. See you there (I’ll be having dinner at one of the restaurants)
Below is the website for further details
http://www.celebrateindia.org.au

Diwali is the most popular of all Hindu festivals (also known as the festival of lights). It is dedicated to the goddess Kali in Bengal and the goddess Lakhsmi, the goddess of wealth in the rest of India. It is a significant festival for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.
The festival also marks the victory of good over evil, and uplifting of spiritual darkness. Symbolically it marks the homecoming of goodwill and faith after an absence, as suggested by the Ramayana.

SBS tonight 8.30: Subhas Chandra Bose

What a fortuitous coincidence that our exploration of Indian nationalism and the anti colonial struggle coincides with the screening tonight of the documentary about Subhas Chandra Bose, a leader in the Indian Independance movement, twice leader of the Indian Congress but also an ideological opponent of Gandhi's technique of satyagraha (non-violent resistance).
See tonight (Friday 10 October), SBS, at 8.30 pm, As it happened.....

Doctor Who

Way back last millenia a John Pertwee story, Planet of the Spiders, was set in a Tibetan Buddhist meditation centre that mis-used the mantra 'Om mani padme hum' in order to summon giant spiders (especially The Great One) from from the planet - used to terrify me.

To find out about this very good story:

Hi All,

It’s my great pleasure to invite you to a Cambodian Festival that will take place at the Immigration Museum (400 Flinders St, Melbourne) on Sunday 14th September 11am - 4pm.

Please come along and enjoy the experience of Cambodian culture and Khmer traditions through dance, music, ritual and food. This one-day festival celebrating the Cambodian community in Victoria includes children’s activities, cooking demonstrations, traditional games and fun for all!

I will be a MC there. So if you see me on that day, don’t forget to say hi and have your camera ready. You know I’m about to tell you a top secret : ) Oh! Just kidding, not a secret but the truth is that I hope you could take a good photo of me on the stage.

Many of us, especially John, don’t know what I’m doing. Some may wonder why I seem to be very busy and sometimes look like not having enough sleep. Now, let me take this opportunity to briefly let you know something about me.

It’s true. I have a lot of things to do. As FairFax paper describes me, I’m a full time student, having a part time job and involving with some volunteering tasks. I volunteer for a charity organisation and involve with lots of activities that most of them are Cambodian related.

Last month was a very busy month but also a very successful one in terms of volunteering services. However, I felt a bit …. that I wasn’t able to fully participate in class. BUT you know, many unfortunate out there need our support. One month of working harder than usual can save thousands of lives. You too can make a difference!

Feel free to ask me HOW.

trip to India

I'm not quite sure if i told anyone this but when I travelled to India - Goa (a beautiful little place along the west coast below Bombay / Mumbai) I stayed in this share house and every morning i would get up early and go down to Vagatore beach and have breaky and go for a stroll until one morning whilst taking a journey around the rocks to cross over to another beach to meet a friend I smelt a horrible smell. I thought perhaps a cow must have fallen from the cliffs overhead and died, i was looking to see if I could find the source of this horrid smell and to my horror I found a dead body - human. At first everything seemed so surreal and I wasn't sure what to do - who do I tell, should i tell anyone etc will someone maybe think I had something to do with it. I felt frozen whilst staring at this body and then I was slightly curious, who was it? what was it doing here? I realised it was a female foreigner, just like myself. She had been floating in the water and drifted ashore maybe a day or two later, I won't go intoto many  details about the state of her body - it was quite shocking. I felt sad and nervous and scared all at once and decided to return to where I had eaten breakfast and inform the Indian guys that I knew there what I had discovered. I think I must have seemed quite casual but honestly it would have been that I was still trying to take it all in. Anyway the story i got later from the guys who spoke to the police was, she was a Swedish tourist only my age (which at the time was 21) and they weren't quite sure about whether or not her death was an accident i.e. drowning, and that they would investigate further. Later that evening all I could think about was, did her family ever find out, who was sad about her departure, why did this happen to such a young girl etc, and it gave me a little kick in the ass to remind me that life is precious and that death is no closer to the aged as it is to the young. We need to treasure that thought and make the most out of the time we have on this crazy planet.

Jo
P.S. My story is quite long and a little intense but I needed to get it off my chest and share, it's one of the first things I think about when I remember my 3 months in India.

Thursday, August 28, 2008

There appears to be two of me... sorry, dont know how i managed that. Effy, could you please delete one of my accounts. I cant figure out how to.
:D
There is an Indian film festival starting Wednesday at the Nova. Don't know any details, just remembered reading it in a newspaper today.
Oooooooh.

EBook tips

Now that I know that it is easy to PRINT sections from eBooks, but tricky to SAVE from eBooks - except page by page or copy and paste into a Word doc - my life is transformed. Thanks for that info.

I have another tip...Effy's asked us a number of questions...use the SEARCH function to look for mentions of the terms she's listed...I'm not suggesting you shouldn't read the whole article...but this helps locate each term easily.
Sarah.

Borobudur

Here's UNESCO's site for this astonishing place: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/592
I think you can get 360 degree panoramas, but I think that might be beyond my current broadband speed until 1 Sept!

How could such a place be built? I think that about many of the world's enduring buildings.
Walking through this built madala would be like walking thorugh the universe.

If I could attach a document a few years ago an accquaintance sent me a vivd description of his visit to Borodudur and how he was completely overwhelmed by the crowds, heat humid, its size and the detail of its decoration.

Sarah.

the William Harman reference

I received this email from Ivan regarding the Harman article. He seemed to have no problems printing it... Today I was able to log on to access the E-book using my normal library pin. I was able to utilise the option of printing more than one page at a time, a problem that encountered during the class. I clicked "Print" and a new window opened in which it gave me 2 options. The first one to put in the page numbers I wanted to print and the second option was to print each chapter individually. So it seems to have worked here at home without any problems, although 30 pages is alot of printer ink.
